Sound familiar?

The injury is one thing. What follows is another.

After a workplace incident or road accident, these experiences are common — and treatable. You don’t need to tick every box to ask for help.

  • You’ve been on edge since the incident — jumpy, watchful, easily startled.
  • The accident replays — intrusive memories, bad dreams, flashbacks.
  • The thought of returning to the site, the road or the role brings dread or panic.
  • Your mood has dropped — flat, withdrawn, not yourself.
  • Pain is wearing you down, and your patience with it is running out.
  • Sleep is broken, and every day is harder for it.
  • Anger and frustration keep surfacing — at the injury, the process, the waiting.
  • You’re pulling away from family and friends, and they’ve noticed.

These are recognised, common responses to injury — not weakness. Psychological injuries can be primary (such as trauma after an incident, or injury from workplace bullying) or secondary to a physical injury; both are treatable, and both can be covered by the schemes. If you’re ever in immediate distress, our urgent help page lists people you can call right now.

What treatment involves

Evidence-based care, built around recovery.

Treatment starts with a comprehensive assessment, then draws on the approaches with the strongest evidence for your presentation — tracked with validated outcome measures as you go.

CBT & trauma-focused CBT

Structured, practical therapy for the anxiety, low mood and adjustment difficulties that commonly follow injury — paced to you.

EMDR

Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing for trauma after workplace incidents and road accidents — processing what happened so it stops intruding on now.

Return-to-work support

Graduated exposure to work-related triggers, confidence rebuilding, and planning alongside your rehabilitation provider for a safe, sustainable return.

Pain & sleep strategies

Where pain and injury disturb mood and sleep, ACT-informed pain management and sleep interventions join the plan.

Sessions run for around 50 minutes, in Parramatta or by telehealth where clinically appropriate — SIRA and Comcare both support telehealth delivery. Interpreters can usually be arranged under your claim if you’d prefer treatment in another language, and family members can join sessions where it helps your recovery.

Getting started

Three ways in, one simple path.

Workers can contact us directly, doctors can refer, and insurers or case managers can allocate — we handle the approvals from there.

01

See your doctor

Your GP or nominated treating doctor completes a Certificate of Capacity (or Comcare medical certificate) recommending psychological treatment. Not sure where to start? Call us first and we’ll walk you through it.

02

Contact our team

Self-referral is welcome — you don’t need to wait for someone else to act. Have your claim number, insurer details and certificate handy, or ask your case manager or GP to refer directly.

03

We arrange approval

We submit the treatment request to your insurer, follow it up, and book your initial assessment. Approved services are billed directly to the insurer — usually with nothing for you to pay.

The details

Reports, approvals and fees.

Reports & communication

  • Initial assessment report, then progress reports to your insurer and treating team at the scheme’s required intervals
  • Allied-health treatment requests for ongoing approval prepared and submitted on your behalf
  • Case conferences with GPs, rehabilitation providers and case managers
  • Validated outcome measures tracked from assessment to discharge
  • We discuss what goes into reports with you before they’re sent

Fees & approvals

  • Approved treatment billed directly to the insurer at the scheme’s gazetted rates — usually nothing out of pocket for you
  • WorkCover NSW, CTP and Comcare claims managed end to end
  • Claim pending or declined? Medicare (with a GP Mental Health Care Plan), private health or self-funding keep treatment moving
  • Disputed decisions can be reviewed through SIRA’s dispute resolution pathways — we’ll point you in the right direction

Common questions

Things people ask before referring.

Is Mind Health an approved provider?
Yes. Mind Health is a SIRA-approved provider of psychological services under the NSW workers compensation and CTP schemes, and a registered Comcare provider. You can verify any provider through SIRA’s public provider search.
What does treatment cost me as the injured worker?
For approved treatment, usually nothing — we bill your insurer directly at the rates set by the scheme. If your claim is pending or declined, we’ll talk you through Medicare, private health and self-funded options before anything is booked.
What should I bring to the first appointment?
Your Certificate of Capacity or medical certificate, claim number, insurer and case manager details, any previous reports, a list of current medications, and your Medicare card and photo ID. Missing something? Come anyway — we can chase paperwork afterwards.
Is what I tell my psychologist confidential?
Sessions are private, but treatment under these schemes differs from standard therapy in one important way: your insurer receives assessment and progress reports, and can access treatment information relevant to the claim. We’re upfront about this from the first session, and we discuss report content with you before it’s sent.
What’s the difference between workers compensation and CTP?
Workers compensation covers injuries that happen at work — physical injuries with psychological impact, and primary psychological injuries such as trauma or workplace bullying. CTP (compulsory third party) covers injuries from motor vehicle accidents, whether you were the driver, a passenger, a pedestrian or a cyclist. The treatment is similar; the paperwork differs — and we manage both.
Can I have my sessions by telehealth?
Yes, where clinically appropriate — SIRA and Comcare both support telehealth delivery. Many injured workers find video sessions easier while mobility or travel is limited, and you can switch between telehealth and in-person visits as your recovery progresses.
Can I keep working while having treatment?
Often, yes. Many people continue full or partial duties during treatment, and therapy can directly support a graduated return-to-work plan built with your doctor, employer and rehabilitation provider.
